Nine years have passed since Rom Sebastian found Sovereign-to-be Jonathan. Now, in nine days, Jonathan will be installed as Sovereign. But this ascension will not come easily, for Saric and his Dark Bloods seek their own rule. And, to complicate matters even further, Feyn, who has laid in stasis for nine years and given herself up so Jonathan can reign, has been filled with Saric's blood. Feyn, who was to become Sovereign and who gave up her right so Jonathan could reign, now obeys the commands of Saric. But Rom and his Mortals are aware of Feyn's abduction by Saric. Ultimately, Feyn, now a Dark Blood herself, comes to meet with Jonathan so that the Sovereign issue could be worked out. Saric has amassed an army of thousands of Dark Bloods ready to strike at the Mortals. What happens next is a true battle between good and evil, and only one side will win.I enjoyed the first book in this series, "Forbidden", and I was anxious to read "Mortal". At first, I was disappointed with the way "Mortal" started out, but I must say that the pace rapidly increased, and the story got much better. I like the character development in this book, and the story rapidly builds throughout. After being unsure if I wanted to continue reading, I am now highly anticipating book three of the series.I'm a big fan of Ted Dekker's books, having read "The Priest's Graveyard", "The Boneman's Daughters", and "The Bride Collector". I'm now a fan of the Books of Mortals series, too. The action and events that take place in this book are exciting to read, and the trials and tribulations faced by the characters are vividly written.I highly recommend "Mortal" and the earlier series book, "Forbidden". If you've never read Ted Dekker or if you are a loyal reader like me, you'll be drawn in to this great series.
