I really liked this movie! I've seen a lot of old movies lately—and I have to say—I really enjoyed this one more than most of what I've watched lately. I liked that it showed me something I've never thought much about before—that is, the plight of those who lived in the border states during the Civil War. It brought me out of my world and into the 19th century for a few hours. This is one of those films that would probably never get more than 2 stars from the professional “critics” yet I loved it! It's filled with likable characters. Selena Royle and Janet Leigh were both fantastic here as the sensitive mother and daughter trying to deal with their father's hatred of Northerners and obsessive distrust of Van's character Henry.Van Johnson is wonderful as the mysterious stranger who sweeps everyone up with his outgoing and jovial nature. He reminds me a lot of his character in Miracle in the Rain, another film of his I highly recommend. There are many charming scenes and there's even a very interesting twist in the end that I was not expecting. This is a hidden gem and I don't know why this movie isn't more well-known and well-liked.
